Wendy Xiao : Chair and Steering Committee Member 2017-2018
Photo of Wendy XiaoWendy is a sixth-year MD/PhD student currently pursuing her PhD in the Neuroscience Department studying human consciousness and hopes to pursue a career in neurology. She studied neuroscience and behavioral biology as well as human biological anthropology at Emory University. She has served on the GSA steering committee in the past three years as well as chair of the Facilities and Healthcare Committee. She is devoted to advocating for student rights by increasing access to affordable housing, affordable childcare, health care, and superior mentorship. She looks forward to continuing to build a coherent graduate student community with GSA.

Laura Brown : Vice-Chair and Steering Committee Member 2017-2018
Photo of Laura BrownLaura Brown is a third-year PhD student in the Music Department at Yale, with a sub-disciplinary focus in Music History. As a musicologist, Laura specializes in Russian and Soviet music, and she is currently interested in the evolving status of musical canons in post-Soviet Russia. This is Laura’s second year as a GSA representative for the Music Department and her first year serving on the Executive Board and Steering Committee. She also helps organize and run the GSA-sponsored Ask-A-Lawyer program.

Alex Zhang: Secretary and Steering Committee Member 2016-2017
Photo of Alex Zhang Alex is a fifth-year graduate student in Classics and Philosophy and currently serves as secretary for the general assembly. This is his second year on GSA, and he was previously a member of the Public Relations Committee and the 320 York Planning Committee. Alex studies Greek political and legal philosophy, having received a B.A. in Classics, Philosophy, and History from the University of Pennsylvania before coming to Yale.

Jennifer Sun: Treasurer and Steering Committee Member 2016-2017
Photo of JenniferSun Jennifer is a fourth-year PhD student in the department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. She has received her B.A. in Molecular Biology & Biochemistry, as well as Chemistry and Music, at Rutgers University. This is her first year serving on the GSA, but she is invested in advocating for improvements to graduate and professional student life at Yale. She is optimistic for the progress which will be achieved this year by open and honest conversation between GSA and the school’s administration.

Kevin Regan: GSA Conference Travel Fellowship (CTF) Director 2016-2017
Photo of Kevin Regan Kevin is a fourth-year graduate student in the Chemistry department. This is his first year serving on the GSA. His research interests are in using spectroscopy to study how photoinduced charge carriers act within metal oxide materials. Charge transport through semiconductor materials is an important process to developing a working photoelectrochemical cell. Prior to Yale, he received his B.S. in Chemistry from Bates College. He is excited to take on the role as the GSA Conference Travel Fellowship Director. He seeks to ensure that all departments within the graduate school have an opportunity to receive funding for conference travel through an unbiased selection process. Outside of research he enjoys playing tennis, hanging out with his dogs, and spending time in the mountains.

Rachel Love: Academics and Professional Development 2016-2017
Photo of Rachel Love Rachel is a fourth-year graduate student in the Department of Classical Studies. She is currently serving her fourth year as GSA representative, where she sits on the executive board as APD chair. Previously, she has served on the Steering Committee and Publicity committees as well as secretary. Rachel is primarily a Latinist studying Roman historiography and its ancient reception. She received her B.A. in Latin and Greek from Tulane University in New Orleans.

Susan Pratt: Facilities and Healthcare 2016-2017
Photo of Susan Pratt Susan is a fifth-year PhD candidate in Physics. This is her second term as a GSA representative and first as chair of the Facilities and Healthcare Committee. In lab, Susan is working on developing a new method for in vivo super-resolution imaging that utilizes a minimally disruptive tag-probe system and basic widefield fluorescence microscopy. Prior to coming to Yale, she received her BS in Physics and BA in Mathematics at the University of Rochester.

Emilio Salazar: Transit and Security 2016-2017
Photo of Emilio Salazar Emilio is a third-year graduate student in the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program and is the Chair of Transit and Security. In lab, he studies visual motion computation in Drosophila, and outside of lab he computes visual motion to stay graceful while dancing. He comes to Yale with a Biomedical and Computer Engineering background from Georgia Tech.

Alicia Steinmetz: Publicity and Steering Committee Member 2016-2017
Photo of Alicia Steinmetz Alicia is a fourth-year PhD student in Political Science. This is her third year serving as a GSA representative and first year as chair of the Public Relations Committee. She is writing her dissertation on the role of imagination in the philosophy of the mind in the 17th Century, and specializes in religion and politics more generally. Before coming to Yale, she earned her BA in Political Science at Bryn Mawr College.

Patrick Dunn: Steering Committee Member 2016-2017
Patrick is a fifth-year PhD student in the Cellular and Molecular Physiology department. This is Patrick’s third year on the GSA. Last year, Patrick served as the Conference Travel Fellowship Director. He currently serves as a member of the Steering Committee.

Katie Oltman: Steering Committee Member 2016-2017
Photo of Katie Oltman Katie is a fourth-year Ph.D. student in Social Psychology studying Prejudice, Discrimination, and Stereotyping. This is her 4th year in the GSA, and her third year on the steering committee/executive board. Katie has been active in student government since the 3rd grade, both as a member of student council organizations and as an advisor to student governments. Her favorite thing about being a GSA representative is feeling like she can make a real difference in the lives of her fellow graduate students, and communicate their concerns to the administration.

Sarah Smaga: Steering Committee Member 2016-2017
Photo of Sarah Smaga Sarah is a fourth-year student in the Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry Department. This is her second year as a GSA representative and her first semester on the Steering Committee. In the lab, Sarah studies how the cellular immune system fights back against HIV infection.  She received her B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Michigan State University.
